Turkey is intensifying its oversight of the digital landscape, focusing specifically on how global tech giants manage the sensitive information of younger users. The country’s Personal Data Protection Authority (KVKK) has officially initiated a comprehensive review of six prominent social media and communication platforms to evaluate their data-processing habits and safety protocols regarding children.

The Scope of the Investigation

The review targets some of the most influential names in the digital world. The KVKK is scrutinizing a diverse group of platforms that command significant attention from younger demographics:

  • TikTok
  • Instagram and Facebook
  • YouTube
  • X (formerly Twitter)
  • Discord

This broad inquiry seeks to determine whether these companies are doing enough to shield minors from the inherent risks of the online environment and to ensure their internal policies align with national data protection standards.

Prioritizing Digital Safety for Children

The primary objective of this regulatory move is to mitigate the potential dangers children face in digital environments. By examining the specific data-processing practices of these platforms, the KVKK aims to verify that safety measures are robust and that children’s personal information is handled with the necessary level of care.

The investigation will look closely at how data is collected, stored, and utilized by these platforms. As digital spaces become increasingly central to the social lives of young people, the Turkish government is signaling that it will hold international tech firms accountable for the protection of its most vulnerable citizens. This move reflects a growing global trend of regulators demanding greater transparency and stricter safeguards from major social media providers regarding the privacy of minors.
