Turning Commercial Trucks into Infrastructure Detectives: How Samsara Is Mapping the World’s Potholes

Potholes are more than just a nuisance for drivers; they are a multi-million dollar drain on municipal budgets and a significant safety hazard. The issue is so pervasive that the micromobility giant Lime recently flagged potholes as a formal risk to its business in its IPO filing. While tech companies have long promised solutions, the problem persists—until now.

From Reactive Repairs to Proactive Intelligence

Traditionally, cities rely on a “reactive” model: waiting for citizen complaints via 311 calls or dispatching manual crews to scout for damage. This process is slow, noisy, and inefficient. Samsara, a leader in fleet management, is flipping this script with a new AI-powered platform called Ground Intelligence.

By leveraging the millions of cameras already installed in commercial trucks for safety and liability, Samsara has trained AI models to identify road damage automatically. This allows cities to move from fixing one hole at a time to planning comprehensive, data-driven repair sweeps.

The Power of Scale

While companies like Waymo and Waze have launched pilots to share road data, Samsara’s advantage lies in its sheer volume. Waymo’s fleet numbers in the thousands, but Samsara’s network spans millions of vehicles. This creates a “moving surveillance network” that provides:

  • High-frequency updates: Trucks travel the same routes daily, allowing the AI to track how quickly a pothole is deteriorating.
  • Visual verification: Cities can access anonymized footage to confirm reports of downed signs or clogged sewers without sending a scout.
  • Multi-hazard detection: Beyond pavement, the system can spot graffiti, broken guardrails, and low-hanging power lines.

Expanding the “Digital City”

The city of Chicago has already signed on to use the service, joining a growing list of municipal partners. Samsara is also expanding this logic to other sectors:

Waste Intelligence

This tool helps sanitation departments and private waste companies verify trash and recycling pickups in real-time, reducing missed stops and customer disputes.

Ridership Management

Designed for transit and school buses, this feature assists drivers with digital manifests and alerts them to “unexpected boarding events,” improving safety for passengers.

By turning everyday commercial fleets into high-tech sensors, Samsara is providing the “signal” cities need to maintain infrastructure before it fails.
