Discord Enhances Nitro Value with New Xbox Game Pass Rewards
Discord is expanding the value of its premium subscription service with the launch of Nitro Rewards. This new perk system provides subscribers with access to external gaming and lifestyle benefits at no additional cost, marking a strategic shift in how the platform incentivizes its paid tiers.
The Perks: Xbox Game Pass and Hardware Discounts
The headline feature of Nitro Rewards is the inclusion of the base tier of Xbox Game Pass. This allows subscribers to access a library of over 50 titles, including popular games like Fallout 4, Stardew Valley, and DayZ. Additionally, the reward includes 10 hours of cloud gaming, enabling users to stream titles to various devices without needing a high-end console or PC.
Beyond software, Discord has partnered with several major gaming peripheral brands to offer rotating discounts. Members can currently save between 15% and 30% on hardware from:
Strategic Growth and Subscription Tiers
These rewards are exclusively available to the standard Nitro subscribers ($9.99 per month). Users on the more affordable Nitro Basic ($2.99 per month) plan will not have access to these external perks.
According to Discord’s co-founder and CTO, Stanislav Vishnevskiy, Nitro remains the company’s primary revenue driver. The goal of Nitro Rewards is to “double down” on value to improve subscriber retention while keeping the core Discord experience free for the general public. This philosophy ensures that while power users get upgrades like 500 MB file uploads and HD streaming, the platform remains accessible to all.
A Broadening Community and Future Challenges
With over 90 million daily active users, Discord has evolved far beyond its origins as a niche chat tool for gamers. It now serves as a hub for everything from activist groups and crypto projects to local social clubs.
However, this massive growth brings increased scrutiny. As Discord scales, it is facing legal challenges regarding user safety. To address these concerns, the platform is preparing to implement new age-verification measures to better protect its younger audience.
