Google is significantly expanding the reach of its AI assistant, integrating Gemini directly into the Chrome browser for users in India, Canada, and New Zealand. This update transforms the browser from a simple window into a proactive workspace, allowing users to interact with Gemini through a dedicated desktop sidebar.

A Multilingual Powerhouse

One of the most impactful aspects of this rollout is the deep support for regional languages. In addition to English, Gemini in Chrome now understands and communicates in eight Indian languages: Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu, and Tamil. This makes advanced AI tools accessible to a much broader demographic across the subcontinent.

Streamlining Productivity Across Tabs

The sidebar integration allows for seamless multitasking. Users can click the “Ask Gemini” icon to summarize long articles, generate quizzes to test their knowledge on a topic, or ask specific questions about the content on their screen.

Key productivity features include:

  • Cross-Tab Intelligence: Gemini can analyze data across multiple open tabs. This is particularly useful for comparing product prices while shopping or organizing travel itineraries from different booking sites.
  • Ecosystem Integration: The assistant connects directly with Gmail, Drive, Keep, and YouTube. You can draft emails in the sidebar, summarize videos with timestamped markers, or check your Calendar without switching apps.
  • Visual AI with Nano Banana 2: Using Google’s latest generative tools, users can transform images. For example, you can upload a photo of a room to see how a new piece of furniture might look in your space.

Mobile Availability and Limitations

The rollout isn’t limited to desktops. Users in India will also see Gemini support arrive on Chrome for iOS, accessible via a page tools icon in the address bar.

However, there is a notable omission in this expansion. The “agentic” capabilities—which allow the AI to take control of the browser to complete complex tasks autonomously—remain exclusive to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States. For now, users in the newly supported regions will focus on the research, summary, and content creation features of the assistant.
