Amazon is transforming the tedious task of digging through product reviews into a fluid conversation. The company has launched “Join the chat,” an AI-driven audio experience designed to act like a knowledgeable in-store associate. Instead of scrolling through thousands of customer comments or technical specifications, shoppers can now ask direct questions and receive real-time, spoken answers generated by generative AI.
A Conversational Shopping Assistant
This new feature is housed within the Hear the highlights section of the Amazon Shopping app. Using what Amazon describes as “AI-powered shopping experts,” the system synthesizes product data and customer feedback to answer specific queries.
For instance, if you are looking at a coffee maker, you can ask if it is beginner-friendly. If you are eyeing a new sweater, you can ask if other customers found the fabric itchy. The AI provides natural, discussion-style responses that are context-aware; it remembers previous questions to refine its answers and avoid repeating information, allowing the user to steer the conversation.
How to Use the Feature
The “Join the chat” capability is currently available to U.S. customers on millions of product pages within the mobile app.
- Access: Users tap the “Hear the highlights” button located just below the main product image.
- Interaction: From there, shoppers can listen to a brief summary or tap the “Join the chat” icon to ask questions via text or voice.
- Multitasking: The audio is designed to continue playing even if the shopper navigates away to browse other items.
Expanding the AI Shopping Suite
This launch is the latest addition to Amazon’s rapidly growing ecosystem of artificial intelligence tools. It joins other recently released features such as Rufus, a generative AI assistant for deep research, and Interests, which surfaces items aligned with a shopper’s long-term preferences. Alongside the Help me decide tool, which offers tailored recommendations based on browsing history, Amazon is betting that conversational AI will significantly reduce the friction of online shopping.
