Mastodon Redesigns Profiles to Bridge the Gap Between Decentralization and Ease of Use

Mastodon is doubling down on its mission to become a viable, mainstream alternative to platforms like X and Threads. Recognizing that the learning curve of a decentralized network can be steep, the platform is rolling out a major visual and functional overhaul of user profiles designed to simplify the experience for individuals and organizations alike.

The revamp follows a series of recent improvements, including a simplified onboarding process and the introduction of “starter packs” called Collections. With monthly active users currently hovering around 800,000—down from a peak of one million—these updates are critical for retaining newcomers who might find the ActivityPub ecosystem confusing.

Streamlining the User Experience

The most immediate change is the consolidation of the profile feed. Mastodon has replaced the separate “Posts” and “Replies” tabs with a single Activity tab. This new layout features a dropdown menu, allowing visitors to filter content by toggling replies and “boosts” (reposts) on or off. Additionally, users can now click on hashtags featured at the top of this tab to quickly filter an account’s history by specific topics.

Clarifying the Decentralized Maze

One of the biggest hurdles for new users is understanding Mastodon’s unique addressing system. Unlike traditional social networks, Mastodon handles include two “@” symbols to denote the user and their specific server. To address this, a new informational pop-up now explains this structure to newcomers.

The platform has also ditched the unpopular pinned posts carousel. Instead, profiles will display one featured post, while any additional pinned content is accessible via a “View all pinned posts” button. This change balances the need for visibility with a cleaner, less cluttered interface.

Enhanced Personalization and Mobile Support

Mastodon is giving users more control over their digital storefront. Key updates include:

  • Flexible Layouts: Custom profile fields (like links and pronouns) are now displayed side-by-side to save vertical space.
  • Tab Management: Users can hide the “Media” or “Featured” tabs entirely or filter replies out of their media gallery to better showcase original work.
  • Mobile Editing: For the first time, these custom fields can be managed directly within the iOS and Android apps.
  • Credibility Tools: Link verification—a free way to establish identity without a centralized “blue check” system—is now easier to find and configure.

These design tweaks, which also include built-in image cropping and alt-text support for headers, are currently live on the mastodon.social server. The wider community can expect these features to arrive with the Mastodon 4.6 software update in the coming weeks.
