Mastodon is doubling down on accessibility. The decentralized social network is rolling out a significant design overhaul aimed at simplifying its interface for users migrating from platforms like X and Threads. While Mastodon gained massive traction following Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, its monthly active user base has dipped from a peak of one million to roughly 800,000. This latest update is a direct response to the “complexity gap” that often confuses newcomers.
A Cleaner, More Functional Profile
The centerpiece of this revamp is a redesigned user profile. Mastodon is moving away from the traditional “Posts” and “Replies” tabs in favor of a single Activity tab.
Dynamic Filtering
Instead of a static list, the new Activity tab features a dropdown menu, allowing visitors to toggle replies and “boosts” (Mastodon’s version of a repost) on or off. Additionally, hashtags now sit at the top of the profile, acting as instant filters for specific topics the user frequently discusses.
Rethinking Pinned Content
The platform has also scrapped the unpopular pinned posts carousel. To balance visibility with a clean feed, users can now feature one primary post, while any additional pinned content is tucked behind a “View all pinned posts” button.
Empowering User Expression and Verification
Mastodon is making it easier for users to manage their digital identity. Custom profile fields—used for links, pronouns, and metadata—are now displayed side-by-side to save vertical screen space. Crucially, these fields can now be edited directly within the iOS and Android apps, rather than requiring a desktop browser.
Other notable improvements include:
- Link Verification: The tool used to establish credibility via ActivityPub is now easier to find in settings.
- Media Control: Users can hide the “Media” or “Featured” tabs to better curate their professional portfolio.
- Accessibility: New tools allow for cropping and adding alt text to profile and header images.
Bridging the Education Gap
One of the biggest hurdles for new users is the decentralized handle system. Unlike the single-@ format on X, Mastodon handles include the server name (e.g., @[email protected]). To demystify this, the update introduces an informational pop-up that explains how these handles work across the “fediverse.”
The update is currently live on mastodon.social and servers running nightly builds. The broader rollout will occur with the release of Mastodon 4.6 in the coming weeks.
