Google is significantly upgrading its Vids app, transforming it from a standard video editor into a more robust AI-driven production suite. The latest update introduces the ability to “direct” digital avatars using natural language, allowing creators to dictate specific actions and interactions within a scene.

Directing the Digital Cast

Users can now use text prompts to instruct avatars to “act,” such as interacting with a specific product, handling a prop, or operating equipment. Despite these dynamic movements, the system is designed to maintain character consistency throughout the footage. Beyond movement, creators can customize their digital actors by tweaking their physical appearance, changing their outfits, and generating entirely new backgrounds through simple descriptions.

Powering Visuals with Veo 3.1

The app now integrates the Veo 3.1 video-generation model, which allows users to create eight-second cinematic clips directly within the editing tool. Access to this feature is based on a tiered system:

  • Standard users: 10 free generations per month.
  • AI Ultra and Workspace AI Ultra accounts: Up to 1,000 generations per month.

This visual update follows the recent addition of the Lyria 3 and Lyria 3 Pro models, which provide high-quality music and sound effect generation for video projects.

Streamlined Workflows and Recording

Google is also simplifying the distribution process. Finished projects can now be exported directly to YouTube, eliminating the need for manual downloads and uploads. For security and review, these exports default to private. Additionally, a new screen-recording extension for Chrome has been added to the suite, enabling users to capture their screen with synchronized audio or video.

A Growing AI Ecosystem

Since its debut in 2024, Google Vids has evolved from an enterprise tool to a consumer-accessible platform. It now supports 2D and 3D cartoon-style avatars and provides voice-overs in seven additional languages, including French, German, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Japanese. This expansion places Google in direct competition with specialized AI video platforms like Synthesia, HeyGen, D-ID, and Lemon Slice.
