United Airlines is rolling out a suite of updates to its mobile app designed to reduce the friction of modern air travel. From real-time security data to advanced baggage tracking, the new features aim to provide transparency during a period of increased airport congestion and staffing challenges.
Real-Time Security Insights
The most notable addition is the integration of estimated TSA wait times directly within the app’s “Travel” section. This feature is particularly timely as a partial government shutdown has led to understaffed checkpoints. Travelers flying through United’s major U.S. hubs—including Chicago (ORD), Denver (DEN), Houston (IAH), Los Angeles (LAX), New York/Newark (EWR), San Francisco (SFO), and Washington, D.C. (IAD)—can now view live wait estimates for both standard security and TSA PreCheck lanes.
Seamless Connections and Rebooking
United is also streamlining the experience for passengers with tight layovers. The app now provides personalized, turn-by-turn directions to departure gates, complete with estimated walking times and real-time status updates.
To further ease connection anxiety, the app includes:
- Connection Saver: Notifications that inform passengers if a flight is being held specifically for them.
- Automated Rebooking: If a flight is delayed or canceled, the app automatically suggests alternative flights and provides digital meal or hotel vouchers to eligible passengers, bypassing the need to wait in line for a customer service agent.
Enhanced Tracking and Weather Transparency
For those worried about luggage, United has integrated Apple’s “Share Item Location” feature. This allows travelers using AirTags or Find My network accessories to share the precise location of a lost bag directly with United’s support team.
Additionally, the app now features real-time radar maps. These maps help passengers visualize how severe weather in distant regions might be causing ripple effects and delays for their specific flight path, providing a clearer picture of why disruptions occur.
