In an era where social feeds are increasingly cluttered with low-quality, automated content, Meta is taking aggressive steps to reclaim Facebook’s reputation as a home for genuine creators. The company recently unveiled a suite of enhanced content protection tools and updated its guidelines to better distinguish between “original” work and what critics have dubbed “AI slop.”
Cleaning Up the Feed
Meta’s push for quality appears to be yielding results. Following a crackdown on unoriginal and spammy content initiated last year, the company reported that views and watch time for original posts doubled in the second half of 2025 compared to the previous year.
To maintain this momentum, Meta has intensified its enforcement against bad actors. In 2025 alone, the platform removed 20 million accounts for impersonation. These efforts have led to a 33% decline in impersonation reports from high-profile creators, suggesting that the platform’s automated detection is becoming more effective at catching clones before they cause harm.
Streamlined Tools for Creators
The centerpiece of this update is a new centralized dashboard designed to help creators fight back when their work is stolen. Facebook is currently testing features that allow creators to:
- Monitor Reels: Track where their original videos are being re-uploaded by impersonators across Meta’s platforms.
- Unified Reporting: Submit takedown requests through a single, streamlined interface rather than navigating multiple menus.
While these tools are highly effective at identifying duplicate video files, Meta acknowledges that the next frontier is unauthorized likeness usage. This remains a broader industry challenge; for instance, YouTube recently expanded its deepfake detection to protect the identities of journalists and public figures.
Redefining “Originality”
To clear up confusion, Meta has refined its definition of original content. Under the new guidelines, content is prioritized if it is filmed directly by the creator or provides meaningful creative value.
What Counts as Original?
- Direct Production: Content captured and edited by the user.
- Value-Add Remixes: Reels that use existing clips but add significant layers like commentary, analysis, or educational overlays.
What is Flagged as Unoriginal?
- Lazy Re-uploads: Posting someone else’s video with zero changes.
- Surface-Level Edits: Adding simple borders, basic captions, or minor filters is no longer enough to bypass “unoriginal” status. These posts will be deprioritized in the feed, limiting their reach and monetization potential.
