Google is significantly broadening the reach of its real-time translation capabilities. The company announced that Live Translate, an AI-driven feature that provides instant audio translations through headphones, is officially launching on iOS and expanding its footprint to several new countries.
Expanding the Global Reach
Previously limited to Android users in just three nations, the service now supports both iOS and Android platforms across a much wider geographic area. Users in the United States, India, Mexico, Germany, Spain, France, Nigeria, Italy, the United Kingdom, Japan, Bangladesh, and Thailand can now access the feature. This expansion marks a major step in making Google’s sophisticated translation tools accessible to a global mobile audience regardless of their device preference.
The Power of Gemini AI
At its core, Live Translate leverages Google’s Gemini AI to deliver more than just literal word-for-word conversion. The system is designed to preserve the speaker’s original tone, cadence, and vocal emphasis. This nuance makes it significantly easier for listeners to identify who is speaking and understand the emotional context of the conversation, rather than listening to a flat, robotic voice.
Practical Applications and Compatibility
The feature acts as a one-way translation tool compatible with any pair of headphones. Google suggests it is ideal for navigating foreign travel—such as understanding complex train station announcements—or following along during multilingual family gatherings.
- Language Support: Works with over 70 different languages.
- Ease of Use: Users simply open the Google Translate app, tap the “Live Translate” option, and connect their headphones to begin.
Universal AI Search Expansion
Alongside the translation news, Google is scaling Search Live, its AI-powered conversational search tool. Originally launched in July 2025, Search Live is now rolling out to over 200 countries and territories. This tool allows users to point their phone cameras at objects and engage in back-and-forth AI conversations based on visual context, bridging the gap between digital search and the physical world. Accessing it is as simple as tapping the “Live” icon under the search bar in the Google app.
