Lucid Group entered 2026 with high expectations after a stellar 2025, a year in which it doubled its production and saw a 55% jump in sales. However, the momentum hit a snag in the first quarter of the new year. While the company’s factories remained busy, a significant gap emerged between the number of vehicles built and the number actually delivered to customers.
The Production-Delivery Disconnect
In the first quarter of 2026, Lucid reported selling 3,093 vehicles. This represents a sharp 42% decline compared to the final quarter of 2025 and a slight dip from the same period a year prior. The slump was not due to a lack of manufacturing capacity; in fact, Lucid produced approximately 5,500 vehicles during the quarter.
The company clarified that the discrepancy was not a result of waning demand. Instead, the bottleneck was traced back to a specific quality control failure involving a third-party supplier.
Safety Concerns and Delivery Delays
The issue centered on the second-row seats of the Lucid Gravity SUV. Following an unapproved change by a supplier, Lucid discovered that certain seat belt anchors were improperly welded. This discovery led to several critical actions:
- A 29-day delivery disruption for the Gravity SUV while the issue was investigated.
- A temporary stop-sale order that lasted for most of February.
- A recall of over 4,000 vehicles reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Lucid officials noted that once the supplier issue was addressed, sales performance rebounded, with January and March showing nearly enough strength to achieve year-over-year growth on their own.
Future Outlook and the Move to Mass Market
Despite the Q1 hurdle, Lucid remains optimistic about its 2026 roadmap. The company has reaffirmed its production guidance of 25,000 to 27,000 vehicles for the year—a substantial increase over the 18,378 units manufactured in 2025.
Lucid is also preparing for a strategic shift toward more affordable EVs. The company is developing a new platform aimed at the $50,000 price point. This move will bring Lucid into direct competition with popular models like the Tesla Model Y, the Rivian R2, and the Chevrolet Equinox EV, marking its first major attempt to capture the mass-market consumer.
