X is leaning into artificial intelligence to bridge language gaps and simplify media creation. The platform is currently deploying two major updates—automatic post translation and a sophisticated photo editor—both powered by xAI’s Grok models. These features aim to modernize the user experience and keep pace with competitors in the AI space.
Global Reach Through Automatic Translation
X has begun rolling out a worldwide automatic translation feature for posts to ensure content has a truly global reach. According to Nikita Bier, the company’s head of product, the translation engine has seen substantial quality improvements over the last few months thanks to Grok’s evolving architecture.
For users who prefer the original text, the feature is highly customizable. By tapping the gear icon on a translated post, users can toggle off automatic translation for specific languages. This strategic move aligns X with platforms like Reddit, which has spent years experimenting with machine translation to connect its international user base.
Advanced Photo Editing on iOS
In addition to text-based updates, X is upgrading its visual toolkit. A new image editor is currently launching on the iOS app, with an Android version expected to follow soon. The editor combines essential utility tools with generative AI.
Standard and Privacy Tools
The updated interface includes standard features like drawing and text overlays. Crucially, it introduces a blur tool designed for privacy and security. This allows users to easily redact sensitive details—such as faces, credit card numbers, or Social Security digits—before a photo goes public.
Generative AI Prompts
The most significant addition is the ability to modify photos using natural language. By prompting Grok within the editor, users can request complex changes, such as “display this photo as a painting in a museum.” This integration places X’s creative tools in the same category as AI offerings from Google and Adobe.
Safety and Subscription Status
The rollout follows a period of heavy scrutiny for Elon Musk and X regarding the creation of non-consensual AI imagery. To mitigate risks, the company previously restricted its primary image-generation features to paid subscribers. While it is not yet confirmed if this new Grok-powered photo editor will be locked behind a paywall, the move signals X’s commitment to making AI a core part of its daily utility.
