Threads Integrates Meta AI to Battle for Real-Time Relevance
Meta is pushing Threads further into the realm of real-time information by testing a new integration with Meta AI. This feature allows users with public accounts to summon the chatbot directly into their conversations to provide context, explain breaking news, or offer recommendations without forcing them to leave the app.
How the Integration Works
Currently in beta testing across Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Argentina, and Singapore, the feature functions through simple mentions. By tagging @meta.ai in a post or a reply, users can trigger a public response from the AI.
The system is designed to handle a variety of queries within the flow of a conversation, such as:
- Trend Analysis: “Why is everyone talking about the World Cup today?”
- Pop Culture Context: “Whose Met Gala looks are currently trending?”
- Sports Updates: “How are the Knicks doing in the playoffs?”
Meta AI processes these requests and responds as a public reply, matching the language used in the original post.
A Strategic Move Against X
This update positions Threads as a direct competitor to X (formerly Twitter) and its internal AI, Grok. Much like Grok, Meta’s tool aims to transform a social feed into a searchable, intelligent database where users can ask for explanations or fact-checks on the fly.
However, integrating AI into public discourse is not without its hurdles. While X’s Grok has faced criticism for generating controversial or offensive content, Meta claims to have implemented more robust safeguards. The company is using this limited beta phase to gather feedback and refine the AI’s behavior before a potential global rollout.
User Control and Privacy
Recognizing that not every user wants an AI participating in their social interactions, Meta has included several moderation tools. If you prefer a human-only experience, you can:
- Mute the @meta.ai account entirely.
- Use the “Not interested” flag on specific AI-generated posts.
- Hide any Meta AI reply that appears on your own thread.
By bridging the gap between social media and generative search, Meta is betting that Threads can become the primary destination for users who want to discuss the news and understand it simultaneously.
