Rather than a blanket label, Apple’s new system allows record labels and distributors to be specific about where AI was utilized. This metadata goes beyond the standard song title and artist name, allowing creators to flag AI usage across four distinct categories:
- Track: The actual audio or instrumental performance.
- Composition: The underlying lyrics or songwriting.
- Artwork: The visual elements and album covers.
- Music Video: Any AI-generated visual content accompanying the release.
The Challenge of Manual Reporting
While this move addresses a growing demand for clarity—highlighted recently by viral user mock-ups on Reddit—it relies on an opt-in model. The responsibility falls entirely on distributors to manually disclose AI usage during the upload process.
This strategy mirrors the path taken by Spotify, which also leans on industry honesty rather than automated enforcement.
