Salesforce is officially moving Slack beyond its origins as a messaging app, repositioning it as an AI-driven command center for the modern enterprise. At a recent event in San Francisco, CEO Marc Benioff and his leadership team introduced a suite of 30 new features designed to turn Slackbot into a sophisticated autonomous agent.
The Rise of Reusable AI Skills
The centerpiece of this update is the introduction of reusable AI skills. This feature allows users to define specific, repeatable workflows for Slackbot that can be triggered across various contexts. For instance, a simple command like “create a budget” prompts the bot to scan internal channels and integrated apps to compile a data-driven plan.
Once the plan is ready, Slackbot can autonomously schedule follow-up meetings, identifying and inviting the correct stakeholders based on their roles and expertise. This shift toward “agentic” behavior builds on earlier updates that allowed the bot to draft emails and manage calendars.
A Connected Ecosystem via Agentforce
Slack is also embracing open standards by becoming a Model Context Protocol (MCP) client. This enables it to coordinate seamlessly with external tools and Salesforce’s own Agentforce platform. By acting as a central hub, Slackbot can route complex tasks to other specialized AI agents or enterprise apps, finding the most efficient path to completion without human intervention.
Intelligent Productivity and Desktop Context
To streamline the workday, Slack now offers advanced meeting tools. The bot can transcribe and summarize discussions in real-time, providing participants with personalized recaps and assigned action items.
Furthermore, Slackbot’s reach now extends to the desktop. By monitoring calendars, deals, and habits, the AI provides proactive suggestions and follow-up drafts. While this level of integration is deep, interim CEO Rob Seaman emphasized that privacy controls are central to the design, allowing users to manage permissions and data access.
A Massive Growth Story
Since Salesforce acquired Slack five years ago, the platform has seen a 2.5x increase in revenue, with over one million businesses now utilizing the service. This latest AI-heavy makeover signals Salesforce’s intent to make Slack the indispensable operating system for every business process.
