While the American market remains focused on the latest from Apple and Samsung, the global landscape is witnessing a fierce arms race in mobile imaging. The Xiaomi 17 Ultra has officially entered the fray, positioning itself not just as a smartphone, but as a dedicated tool for enthusiasts, bolstered by a deep partnership with Leica.

Professional-Grade Optics

The centerpiece of the 17 Ultra is its massive camera island. The main shooter utilizes a 1-inch type 50-megapixel sensor with an f/1.67 aperture, designed to maximize light intake and detail. Beyond the primary lens, Xiaomi has introduced a unique 200-megapixel telephoto lens featuring continuous optical zoom from 3.2x to 4.3x.

The software experience is heavily influenced by Leica, offering “Authentic” and “Vibrant” color profiles alongside specialized filters like Leica B&W and Sepia. For those seeking versatility, the system supports multiple focal lengths—including 23mm, 28mm, and 35mm equivalents—while a 50-megapixel ultrawide lens handles both expansive landscapes and high-detail macro shots.

Flagship Performance and Battery Tech

Under the hood, the device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, paired with 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. The display is equally impressive: a 6.9-inch AMOLED panel boasting a 3,500-nit peak brightness and a 120Hz refresh rate.

Despite its power, Xiaomi has prioritized efficiency:

  • Battery: A 6,000 mAh silicon/carbon-ion battery provides multi-day endurance.
  • Charging: 90W wired charging and 50W wireless support.
  • Ergonomics: Remarkably, the phone is lighter than the iPhone Pro Max despite its larger battery capacity.

The Photography Kit Pro

To bridge the gap between phone and camera, Xiaomi offers the 17 Ultra Photography Kit Pro (€199.99). This USB-C accessory transforms the device into a traditional camera, adding a physical grip, a two-stage shutter button, and a customizable dial for ISO or shutter speed. It even includes a 2,000 mAh internal battery and a ring for 67mm lens filters.

Starting at €1,499 in Europe, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra faces stiff competition from the Oppo Find X9 and the Vivo X300 Ultra, but its early launch and sophisticated hardware give it a significant head start in the 2026 flagship race.
