Ethics and Prediction Markets: Polymarket Removes Wagers on Downed Air Force Personnel

Polymarket has shuttered a controversial betting pool centered on the rescue of U.S. Air Force personnel shot down over Iran. The platform faced immediate scrutiny after allowing users to wager on the specific date the United States would confirm the recovery of the service members.

Political Backlash and the “Death Market” Label

The betting pool drew sharp condemnation from Representative Seth Moulton (D-MA), who characterized the wagers as “disgusting.” In a public statement, Moulton described the platform as a “dystopian death market,” emphasizing that the subjects of these bets are real individuals with families and friends.

Moulton’s criticism extended beyond rhetoric; the congressman recently implemented a policy banning his staff from participating in prediction markets, including Polymarket and its competitor Kalshi. He also drew attention to the platform’s ties to high-profile figures, noting that Donald Trump Jr. is an investor in the company.

Polymarket’s Response and Internal Safeguards

In the wake of the backlash, Polymarket removed the market, claiming it did not meet the company’s internal integrity standards. The platform issued a statement explaining that the wagers should never have been published and that they are currently investigating how the listing bypassed their existing safeguards.

The controversy coincided with an announcement from President Donald Trump, who confirmed on a Sunday that a second service member—a weapons system officer—had been successfully rescued.

A Pattern of Geopolitical Wagering

This incident is not the first time Polymarket has faced questions regarding the ethics of its contracts. The platform has previously hosted high-volume trading on geopolitical violence, including hundreds of millions of dollars in bets tied to U.S. and Israeli military actions in Iran. While prediction markets argue they provide valuable data on the probability of world events, critics argue that placing price tags on human lives and military conflicts crosses a fundamental moral line.
