Anthropic is pivoting its pricing strategy for Claude Code, signaling an end to the era of “all-you-can-eat” access via third-party tools. In a move first reported via Hacker News, the company announced that subscribers can no longer apply their standard usage limits to external harnesses, starting with the popular open-source tool OpenClaw.

A Shift to Pay-As-You-Go

Under the new policy, which took effect April 4, 2026, users of third-party interfaces must transition to a separate pay-as-you-go billing model. This change is not limited to OpenClaw; Anthropic intends to roll out this requirement across all third-party harnesses in the near future.

Boris Cherny, who leads the Claude Code team, defended the decision on social media, citing “engineering constraints.” He noted that existing subscription models were not built to handle the high-volume usage patterns typical of these external tools. According to Cherny, the change is essential for the company to manage growth sustainably.

Rivalry and Open Source Friction

The announcement arrives amidst a backdrop of corporate musical chairs and intensifying competition. OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger recently joined OpenAI, bringing his project under the influence of Anthropic’s primary rival. Steinberger criticized the move, suggesting that Anthropic is effectively “locking out” the open-source community after absorbing its innovations into their proprietary platform.

Despite the friction, Anthropic maintains it is a proponent of open source, with Cherny highlighting his own recent contributions to OpenClaw’s prompt cache efficiency. For users unhappy with the new terms, the company is offering full refunds to ensure transparency regarding supported use cases.

The Battle for Developers

This pricing shift highlights the growing stakes in the AI developer-tool market. While Anthropic refines its monetization, OpenAI has been refocusing its own efforts—reportedly scaling back creative AI projects like Sora—to capture the enterprise and software engineering segments where Claude Code currently holds significant mindshare.
