Instagram is attempting to recapture the raw, spontaneous energy of its early days with a new experimental platform called Instants. Currently being tested in Spain and Italy, the app focuses on unedited, “in-the-moment” snapshots that prioritize authenticity over the polished, influencer-heavy aesthetic of the main feed.
How Instants Works
The core of the experience is simplicity and speed. Unlike the standard Instagram experience, Instants imposes strict limitations to ensure content remains genuine:
- In-App Capture Only: Users cannot upload photos from their camera rolls. Everything must be captured live through the app.
- Single-Tap Sharing: Photos are taken and shared with a single tap.
- Zero Editing: Aside from adding text, there are no filters or modification tools allowed.
- Ephemeral Viewing: Shared photos can only be viewed once and disappear entirely after 24 hours.
Integration and Availability
Meta is exploring multiple ways for users to engage with this new format. Instants is available as a standalone app on both iOS and Android, but it can also be accessed as a feature within the primary Instagram app.
The experience is designed to be intimate. Users share their “instants” with mutual followers or their existing Close Friends list. Because these lists are synced across both applications, the transition between platforms is seamless.
Competing for Authenticity
The launch of Instants is a strategic response to the rise of “low-stakes” social media popularized by apps like Snapchat, Locket, and BeReal. As the main Instagram feed has become increasingly dominated by professional content and advertising, many users have sought out smaller, more private spaces for real-life updates.
However, the experiment faces significant hurdles. The trend of unfiltered sharing has seen a recent decline, and many users already utilize Instagram Stories for casual content. Whether a dedicated app for disappearing photos can find a permanent home in a crowded market remains to be seen.
